Solidarity efforts strengthened in Africa and Middle East

As part of its continuing effort to strengthen and broaden solidarity initiatives in Africa and Middle East, BWI hosted a meeting with its MENA Solidarity Support Organisations last 26 November.

The meeting, which was officiated by BWI Regional Representative Crecentia Mofokeng, was attended by partners from 3F Denmark, CGT France, IOM MENA Regional office, ILO MENA and BWI Affiliates from Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine and Tunisia. BWI Regional Education Officer for Africa and Middle East Garikanai Shoko and BWI MENA Coordinator Wassim Rifi also participated in the meeting.

BWI’s solidarity partners in the region assessed many of their solidarity efforts and discussed ways to reach out to more targeted recipients. They presented successful initiatives to strengthen MENA unions such as capacity-building and vocational trainings for national and migrant workers in the region and women workers in the construction sector, and alliance-building and strengthening among different trade unions.

BWI’s solidarity partners also had an opportunity to visit some of the Lebanese workers’ houses that it helped rebuilt and/or renovate after being devastated by the Beirut Port blast. A total of 42 houses were reconstructed through BWI’s solidarity campaign among its affiliates and partners.
