The Building and Wood Workers’ International is holding its 4th World Congress to decide on its goals, priorities, and actions for the 2018-2021 Congress period. It will also elect its leadership that includes the World Council, the Worlds Board, the President and two Deputy Presidents, the General Secretary, and the Auditors.

As BWI is representing 340 trade unions in 132 countries, the Congress will also provide the opportunity for the Regional and the International Women Committees to meet and discuss their specific plans and agenda within the global union. Thematic forums and regional and issue-based exhibits will form part of the weeklong event around the 2-day Congress proper.

While the whole region of Africa and the Middle East-North Africa is hosting, our two South African affiliates, National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and Building Construction and Allied Workers' Union (BCAWU) are instrumental in organising the Congress and in ensuring it as a memorable experience.

The theme and logo uses “Amandla” which is the rallying cry of the South African struggles and resistance. It means power in Zulu and Xhosa language. The banner follows the colours of the “Rainbow Nation’s” flag while the raised fists symbolise the 5 Regions of BWI.

“Power to the People” further emphasises the need for the trade unions to recover its power in the world of work and expresses our call for strong voices for democracy, human rights, tolerance, and social justice to assert in shaping our societies.

#AmandlaBWI is the Congress hashtag. We encourage our members, allies and supporters to use it to refer to BWI Actions throughout 2017 and during the next Congress period.
