Asia-Pacific unions condemn attacks on democracy in Cambodia

Three Asia-Pacific Regional Organisations of the Global Union Federations – Building BWI, IUF and PSI representing 378 affiliated trade union organisations with about 15 million combined members across the Asia-Pacific and part of the Cambodian Trade Union Movement – condemned in the highest possible terms the recent decision of the Supreme Court of Cambodia to dissolve the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP). Resulting from discussions that began in December 2014, the Building and Wood Workers’ International (BWI), a global union federation signed today an agreement with QDVC (a Qatari shareholding company with two shareholders: Qatari Diar Real Estate Investments Company and VINCI Construction Grands Projects) and VINCI, a French-based global player in concessions and construction. On 12 November, the Korean Construction Workers’ Union (KCWU) raised the pressure in the lead-up to the union’s general strike (28 November), demanding that the Construction Workers’ Act be extended to guarantee retirement benefits and basic labor rights to the owner-operators of construction equipment and vehicles.
