On the 17th of January 2020, the German trade union IG BAU announced that a new wage agreement between the IG BAU and the construction employers was reached to increase minimum wages in construction. The new nationwide wages will apply from 1 April 2020.
According to IG BAU Federal President Robert Feiger, “More than 200,000 construction workers will benefit from the higher minimum wages”. The minimum wages for unskilled construction workers will increase by 35 cents to EUR 12.55 per hour. In addition, the so-called second minimum wage (for skilled workers), which are applicable to the Western German States and Berlin, will be increased by 20 cents. In West Germany, the second minimum wage will be 15.40 euros per hour and in Berlin 15.25 euros. The new, increased minimum wages will apply until the end of 2020.
“We would like to congratulate our comrades in Germany on this very important victory for workers. In times when we see serious attacks on workers and trade union rights in many countries in Europe, it is extremely important to have trade union wins. Victory for workers in one country is victory for all,” said Ambet Yuson, BWI General Secretary.
