Farewell, Nor Azlan Yaacob
BWI mourns the passing of Nor Azlan Yaacob, General Secretary of Timber Employees Union Peninsular Malaysia (TEUPM) last 2 October 2021. He was recovering from a heart and liver illness before his untimely passing. He was 58.
Azlan was one of the most active, dynamic and loyal leaders of IFBWW and BWI. He served as titular member of the BWI Asia Pacific Regional Committee until his death. He was instrumental in the trade union building and struggles of the Sabah Timber Industry Employees Union (STIEU) and the Timber Employees Industry Employees Sarawak (TIEUS). As Chairperson, he played a key role in leading the joint activities of the All-BWI Malaysian Liaison Council (MLC).
He also steered the struggle of migrant workers in Malaysia for labour rights, pioneering their union organising in the wood sector, recruiting them to join TEUPM and addressing their issues to improve working conditions.
Azlan was a dedicated trade unionist until the end. Before his departure, he was rallying the BWI MLC in a campaign to bring justice to all the victims of occupational accidents. The night before he left us, he met with several of his co-union leaders to discuss union matters.
Azlan was a true comrade and friend to many trade unionists , especially BWI affiliates in the region. He will always be remembered for his dedication and great contributions to the trade union movement. His passing is a great loss to BWI and many other fraternal organisations.
Our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. We pray that we all remain strong in our moment of sorrow and grief.
May Azlan’s soul rest in eternal peace.
