BWI: Build hope in Beirut
"Home is where hope is."
This was the message sent by BWI to all its affiliates, partners, allies and friends as it encouraged them to donate to the people of Beirut, especially its workers, who were hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic and a prolonged economic crisis that decimated millions of jobs, and recently, a social unrest that was triggered by the catastrophic Beirut explosions that injured and killed many people.
BWI General Secretary Ambet Yuson said that the trade unions' historical role in the building and reconstruction of societies is the driving force behind the effort to help rebuild and/or repair the houses of workers that were damaged by the Beirut explosions.
"Trade unions are builders of nations. We build hope and dreams. As such, we call on all our affiliates, partners and allies to respond to Lebanon's humanitarian crisis by donating generously to our solidarity campaign and expanding further its circles of empathy and compassion," Yuson said.
"The people of Beirut need our urgent help and solidarity. They are fighting for their survival. Amidst their suffering and despair, we must help them find hope again. We must help them rebuild their lives and dreams," Yuson added.
BWI explained that all donations and contributions will go to the following:
Procurement of construction and building materials, such as glass, cement, wood, aluminum and paint in the repair and/or rebuilding of houses damaged by the explosions.
Purchase of face masks, gloves, safety helmets and other personal protective equipment for workers and the public.
Holding of urgent basic vocational training, including occupational health and safety trainings for the migrant and refugee workers.
"Solidarity wages" to volunteer migrant and refugee workers.
