Nigeria: Union works to ensure labour rights and decent jobs

The Construction and Civil Engineering Senior Staff Association (CCESSA) successfully held its 12th National Triennial Delegates’ Conference on 8 April in Abuja, Nigeria.

With the theme “The Trajectory of Development of Critical Infrastructure in Nigeria and Security of Employment of Construction Industry,” 250 voting delegates attended the conference together with guests and observers, notably a representative for the President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Chairperson of the TUC Women Commission, the Managing Director of the Federation of Construction Industry (FOCI), and a representative from the federal Minister of Labour and the Registrar of Trade Unions.

Crecentia Mofokeng, BWI Regional Representative for Africa and Middle East, delivered a solidarity message through a recorded video where she encouraged CCESSA to participate in all of the processes of the country’s infrastructure projects, and work toward guaranteeing the successful implementation of core labour rights and the achievement of decent jobs.

Mofokeng also invited the Triennial Delegates’ Conference to develop practical and time-sensitive solutions to encourage unity, strengthen tripartite relations and change the labour market for the better in Nigeria.

The Conference happened just a few days after the tragic and untimely passing of Barrister Musa-Lawal Ozigi, TUC’s Secretary General and CCESSA General-Secretary. Mofokeng took the opportunity to convey BWI’s deepest condolences to Musa-Lawal Ozigi’s family, friends and trade union comrades.
