Construction unions continue solidarity for Cuba
In a recent visit to Cuba, the unions said that the US blockade of the Cuban economy has been unequivocally condemned by the international community, especially by the United Nations (UN), numerous times already. However, the embargo persists even during the height of the pandemic.
“With the arrival of the pandemic, I expected some semblance of humanity, but nothing changed,” Workers’ Central Union of Cuba (CTC) General Secretary Ulises Guilarte said.
“However, this only makes us stronger. Today, we are the first country in Latin America and the Caribbean, and the second in the world, on COVID-19 immunisation. More than 90 percent of our population are fully vaccinated. We are also the only country in the world that has developed a massive vaccination campaign for children over two years old,” he added.
Guilarte made the remarks before BWI General Secretary Ambet Yuson, CGT Construction (France) General Secretary Bruno Bothua and Federal Secretaries Philippe Gaborieau and Joël Ellen.
"We are witnesses to Cuba’s resistance to the embargo. For ten years now, we have been regularly visiting Cuba with a delegation from the biggest construction unions in the world. We bring our class solidarity and the concrete support of our 12 million members from more than 130 countries, the latest of which is the acquisition of COVID-19 medicines for the Cuban people. This was made possible as a result of our collaboration with the National Union of Construction Workers (SNTC),” Yuson said.
SNTC General Secretary Misael Rodríguez Llanes said that BWI has strongly encouraged communication amongst the different trade unions in Cuba through the creation of the website "El Constructor Cubano.”
“We plan to continue cooperating with the FOS of Belgium and its affiliates around the world, and sustain coordination with the SNTC and CTC,” he ended.
